The Civil War in Missouri
The Battle of Lexington was a Civil War battle which took place in Missouri in the small town of Lexington near the Missouri River. It is also known as the Battle of the Hemp Bales, because hemp bales were used as breastworks by the Southerners. The Southerners, the Missouri Guard, won the battle, which lasted from September 13-20, 1861.
